The first VRs to enter the Cardiff fleet were 20 ECW series 2 variants seating 74 passengers, unlike the "K Liners" they had no power steering and a top speed of only 45 MPH if you were lucky! They were not liked by most drivers, and conductors found their lower internal saloon height uncomfortable. All were later fitted with fully automatic gearbox conversions and this did nothing to endear them to drivers or passengers alike.
